Bank of China in Nairobi: Locations, Contacts, and Operating Hours

By admin • 30 Jul 2026 • 4 min read

Important Clarification Before You Visit

If you’re searching for a “Bank of China branch” in Nairobi expecting a retail banking hall — like you’d find with KCB, Equity, or Standard Chartered — it’s worth knowing upfront: Bank of China does not operate retail bank branches in Kenya. It maintains a single Representative Office in Nairobi, licensed by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).

Under Kenyan banking law, representative offices are restricted to marketing, liaison, and research functions. They cannot accept deposits, open accounts, issue loans, or conduct any activity classified as banking business under the Banking Act. So there’s no network of branches, no ATMs, and no over-the-counter teller services to list — just the one office.

Note: Some records list the same building simply as “Morningside Office Park, Ngong Road” without the unit/floor detail — Unit 1, 5th Floor, Wing B is the more specific address on file with the Central Bank of Kenya’s directory of authorised representative offices.

What the Office Actually Does

Per the Central Bank of Kenya’s authorisation, the Nairobi office’s mandate is to:

  • Market Bank of China’s products and services to existing and prospective clients in Kenya and the wider East African region
  • Conduct market research on business opportunities
  • Act as a liaison between Bank of China’s head office/affiliates and customers or partners in Kenya
  • Support the growing base of Chinese enterprises operating in Kenya, particularly around infrastructure, trade, and investment

It does not process walk-in retail transactions such as account opening, cash deposits/withdrawals, or forex exchange over the counter.

Opening and Closing Hours

Because this is a corporate liaison office rather than a customer-facing bank branch, Bank of China does not publish standard retail “opening and closing hours” for walk-in banking services (there are none to offer). As a representative office of a foreign bank operating in Nairobi, it generally follows standard Kenyan business-hours conventions:

  • Monday – Friday: approximately 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (typical Nairobi office hours)
  • Saturday, Sunday & public holidays: closed

If your visit involves a formal meeting, corporate inquiry, or partnership discussion, it’s strongly recommended to call or email ahead to confirm hours and schedule an appointment, since the office is not set up for unannounced walk-ins the way a bank branch would be.

If You Need Actual Retail Banking Services

Since Bank of China cannot serve retail banking needs in Kenya, if you’re looking for day-to-day banking services (accounts, loans, forex, trade finance transactions), you’ll need a licensed commercial bank operating in Kenya. Kenya’s commercial banking sector includes local institutions (e.g., KCB, Equity Bank, Co-operative Bank) and other foreign-owned banks with full branch networks (e.g., Standard Chartered, Absa, Stanbic). For China-linked trade finance specifically, some Kenyan commercial banks maintain RMB clearing or correspondent banking relationships worth asking about.
